Planning for Outdoor Play

At Tiny Town Nursery, we believe that all children should be able to learn and develop in all environments, including having regular access to an outdoor area in which to do so.

We understand that all children are unique and individual and flourish in different areas, so we plan to use all of the areas that we provide to their full potential.

Our outdoor area at Tiny Town, Warwick, is located by the main entrance of the nursery. We have blue spongy flooring, which is perfect for new walkers and is easily cleaned. We provide a range of toys for the children to use and we work closely with a local Childcare Support Centre in drawing up action plans to make resource boxes for the different areas of learning to be used outside.

All the children across the nursery will access our outdoor area at least once a day (weather permitting), and this works on a rota basis for the different rooms. Each room has two allocated time slots which are theirs to use as they wish.

However, the routines and rotas in place are as flexible as the children need them to be and can be changed to suit the specific needs of the group, in consultation with the other rooms.

Any activity that is carried out indoors can be easily transferred outside so the children benefit from the outdoor area further.

The boards which surround the perimeter of the garden are used for outdoor mark making, sensory experiences and also shield the children from view of the main road.

The staff in room will plan to use the outdoor area, using the observations that they have collected.
